The greater Basel region is the largest life cluster in Europe and ranks in the
top 5 in the world. It is a major center for pharmaceuticals, biotech, medtech,
diagnostics, nanotech and chemicals. More than 30,000 people are working in life
sciences and about 40% of the world's pharmaceutical industry is established in
the greater Basel region.

Syngenta, Synthes,
Lonza, Straumann,
Ciba,
Actelion, Bachem and
Clariant. It also has a network
of smaller life science companies with the likes of:

The companies are supported by an excellent array of academic institutes: Biozentrum of the
University of Basel, the Friedrich
Miescher Institute (FMI) and the
Swiss Nanoscience Institute
(SNI).
